PetroAcademy combines PetroSkills industry knowledge, expertise, content, and technology to develop workforce competency. Each PetroAcademy Skill Module provides a summary of the specific learning activities that the learner will complete, and may include activities such as reading assignments, self-paced e-learning, virtual instructor-led sessions, discussion forums, group exercises, case studies, quizzes, field trips, and other activities. These continuous development activities increase knowledge retention, reduce time to competency, and provide just in time learning at the point of need.

Transforming Instructor-Led Petrophysics Competency Map (CMAP) to Blended

While face-to-face courses deliver a set of skills targeted for a specific type of participant, blended skill modules align with competencies focused on a specific work product. This means that there is no overlap with other skill modules, allowing a more efficient use of the learner's time. PetroAcademy allows learners to learn at the point of need with a strong tie to their job roles. PetroAcademy can be completely virtual, which eliminates travel expenses and lowers overall training costs.

Module Design Principles by Skill Level

There are three levels of skill modules in PetroAcademy:


Core Skill Modules: Designed to provide the learner with a basic introduction to the content at an awareness competency level. Each Core Skill Module takes approximately 3-5 hours and can be completed at any time. All learning activities within the module are self-paced and allows flexibility depending on the learner’s availability (the entire module does not need to be completed in one sitting).

Fundamental Skill Modules: Designed to prepare the learner to complete a specific work product at a fundamental application competency level. Each Fundamental Skill Module is delivered within a week and will have both self-paced activities and some live instructor-led virtual sessions. The live Instructor-led sessions are primarily facilitated application sessions and the opportunity for participants to engage with an expert.

Workshop Skill Modules: Designed to prepare the learner to complete a specific work product at the skilled application competency level. The pre-requisites for Workshop Skill modules include Core and Fundamental skill modules. Workshops are primarily focused on application with several live instructor-led virtual sessions and some self-paced activities that are delivered across a few weeks. Each instructor-led virtual sessions will be recorded and available for participants to review. See example Workshop Schedule below.

PetroAcademy™ delivers virtual training programs to petroleum professionals using Petroskills industry knowledge, expertise, and technology. Based on the skills from Petroskills competency maps, each PetroAcademy™ Skill Module is designed to deliver the same set of competencies and work products as our face-to-face training.

All course materials will be provided in the digital format through the PetroAcademy™ platform. This includes access to the virtual instructor-led sessions, reading assignments, course textbook, and other exercises. Each learner will have access to PetroAcademy™ for three years from the start date.

Each instructor-led session is recorded and will be available to the learners to review after the session. If you are unable to attend one of the instructor-led virtual sessions, you can review the recording.

You will need a computer, microphone headset or telephone, and internet connection to enjoy a fully interactive learning experience through PetroAcademy™. Although not required, a webcam is recommended. For virtual instructor-led sessions, please see our Virtual Delivery Classroom User Guide for additional information.

For every 1 hour of online learning, you will receive 1 PDH and/or 0.1 CEU for completing a PetroAcademy™ skill module.
